Narayana Murthy's 70-hour work week call raised in parliament. What government said

The government is reportedly not considering the 70-hour work week call by Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, a proposal that saw fierce debates on the internet. “No such proposal is under consideration of Government of India,” Rameswar Teli, the minister of state (MoS) for labor and employment, said on Monday, according to a Hindustan Times report.

Teli was replying to a question by three Lok Sabha MPs during the ongoing winter session of parliament. Congress MP Komati Venkata Reddy, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Manne Srinivas Reddy and YSR Congress Party MP Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju asked the Ministry of Labor and Employment if the government is evaluating the 70-hour work week proposal made by Narayana Murthy, Hindustan Times reported.

Murthy, 77, had advised youngsters in India to work for 70 hours a week to increase India's overall productivity.

In conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai on a podcast in October, Murthy said that India’s work productivity is among the lowest in the world and to compete with countries like China, India’s youngsters must put in extra hours of work – as Japan and Germany did after World War 2.

“So therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, ‘This is my country. I’d like to work 70 hours a week'," he had said.

The software icon appeared on the first episode of 3one4 Capital’s podcast ‘The Record’, which was released on YouTube.

While a section of the internet, including Ola boss Bhavish Aggarwal agreed with Murthy's point, it did not go down well with a large number of social media users who pointed out that working for extra hours consistently could in fact lead to a drop in productivity among the youth.
